Origin
Its first usage was around 1919. The term is a back-formation from the 14th-century word 'peevish,' meaning ornery or ill-tempered.
Pet peeves often involve specific behaviors of someone close, such as a spouse or significant other. These behaviors may involve disrespect, manners, personal hygiene, relationships, and family issues.
A key aspect of a pet peeve is that it may well seem acceptable to others. For example, a supervisor may have a pet peeve about people leaving the lid on the copier up and react angrily, be annoyed when others interrupt when speaking, or by messy desks of his or her subordinates. That same supervisor may witness employees coming into work late, and not feel any annoyance whatsoever.

We all have pet peeves, right? Those things, mostly little, that human beings do that just flat bug the hell out of you. Things that grind your gears and get under your skin. I'll take one of mine for example: people who do not put their shopping carts up. Why does that bug me? First, it's just pure laziness. Second, that cart could start rolling, and hit my car that I just bought (which ties into another one of my pet peeves: people who are inconsiderate of other peoples vehicles). Their laziness could cause $200-$300 worth of damage to my car. Infuriating right?
Dr. Richard Carlson wrote a wonderful little book (Don't sweat the small stuff...because it's all small stuff) of a 100 or so ways to cut out the small things in your life that cause stress. In the book he basically says do not let the little things in life take time and years off your life by sitting around and worrying about them. Just stop, and think of all the good things in life.
Have you ever thought about that? Where does worrying really get you? All it does for me is cause anxiety and less sleep. So, that is where I got the motivation for my short blog this week. Take my challenge this week, and cut out the pet peeves. Don't let those small things get you down. Did you see what happened when I brought up my pet peeve of the shopping carts? I went on a rant of lazy and inconsiderate people. Had I really been on a roll it would have been something on my mind for hours. Time that I should be thinking of how lucky I am right now to have such a wonderful fiancee, family, and friends who I love, and who love me. How many time has my car been hit by a shopping cart? Zero. How many people do I know whose car has been hit by a cart? Zero, yet it is one thing I that would always bother me.
Look, I think you get my point, and my loving fiancee reminded me this is a blog not a novel.
Next time you think about your pet peeve, remember: it's probably not that big of a deal.
Coming up this week:
I told you...I'm random, so stay with me here. I'm going to try and blog twice a week. One will be fun and one will be a "weekly challenge"
